Every year The President gives the State of the Union Address, governors give the State of the State, and every year since 2012, Teton County has held “22 in 21: Jackson Hole in the 21^st Century”, an annual, in-depth look at the state of the greater Jackson Hole community. This year’s event included presentations from the Superintendents of Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks, the Town of Jackson Administrator, the Chairman of Teton County Board of Commissioners, and the Chairwomen of Teton County schools, among many others. This year’s topics included Jackson Hole visitation numbers, potential cuts to Wyoming’s education budget, the role of the sales and lodging tax in Teton County, and, of course, housing.

Here are just a few of the striking statistics about in this year’s report:

• Of 1,824 US counties with a population of over 20,000, Jackson Hole has the most jobs per capita, second only to New York City.
• Teton County’s high school graduation rate is 96%, the highest in the state.
• In 2015, government jobs accounted for 19% of all jobs in Wyoming. The national average is 13%.
• From 2000 to 2017 annual recreational visits to Yellowstone grew at an annual rate of 1.8%. Visits to Grand Teton grew by 1.2%
• In Teton County, 87.9% of total incomed earned is achieved by households earning more than $200,000, the highest in the US.
• In 1969 total personal income of Teton County residents was $27.5 million; per capita income was $5,822. In 2015, total personal income was $4.5 billion; per capita income was $194,861, 3.5 times the state average.
• Since 2000, in Teton County second home growth has outpaced primary home growth by a ratio of 14:1.

For most of the country, the first week of April brings warmer weather and the first signs of Spring. While many folks stow their winter jackets and order the season’s newest swimwear, folks in Jackson Hole savor the last week of skiing at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort and celebrate with a week-long lineup of concerts, dining, community activities, and so much more, making it one of the most memorable times to be in Jackson Hole. Locals and visitors alike are out in force to enjoy all that Jackson Hole has to offer as a sort of ‘last hurrah’ before the Spring shoulder season sets in. This year, closing weekend coincides with the Easter holiday and many school’s spring breaks, which is all the more reason to make Jackson Hole your Spring Break venue for 2018!

Closing week kicks off on April 1^st with Gaper Day, an April Fool’s Day tradition at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. What you’ll need: your camera and your best, nay, your most ridiculous costume! Born in Jackson Hole, Gaper is a term to refer to an out-of-towner or a beginner on the slopes. But not just any visitor or beginner. Most importantly, Gapers unabashedly sport their 1980’s-era florescent onesies and ill-fitting equipment with all the confidence of a professional skier. Each year on April 1^st, everyone joins in on the fun with their most outlandish costume. (The photo for this blog post was taken by our very own Reid Matthews last year on Gaper Day. The photo is just a little taste of the fun that Gaper Day has in store.) Groups of revelers establish themselves at various locals on the ski hill, ski jump competitions are a spectacle to enjoy, and live music is available under the tram.
