See the Leaves Change in Jackson Hole: Our Favorites for Fall

Fall in the Tetons

It is no secret that Jackson Hole is a gorgeous place to live and play, but when it comes time for the explosion of Fall colors that sweep through the valley, the list of things to do and places to see doubles. Golden amber, fiery reds, and pops of orange wash over the pastel hues of summer as Jackson Hole erupts into a vibrant place of things to do, and places to explore. If you want to live like a local, here are 10 of our favorite things to do in Fall in Jackson Hole:

1. It should come as no surprise that our first favorite thing about Fall in Jackson Hole is the turning of the leaves against the cinematic sunsets and never-ending blue skies. Outside of the ethereal color pallet, the sun setting in Fall means everyone is up to see the sun go down.

2. Hiking doesn’t mean trying to trek in the hot sun. The cooler temperatures that come with Fall make all those gorgeous hiking trails we have access to a lot more enjoyable for both beginners and avid hikers.

3. On that, Fall is perfect for exploring both Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Park. The colors are beautiful, the animals are coming lower into the valleys and, most importantly, these tourist type areas are that much less populated in Fall compared to summer. If staying in town is more your thing, most restaurants and tourist attractions will also run loads of deals in the shoulder seasons meaning you can save those dollars.

4. Have you ever heard of a Fat Bike? For adrenaline and adventure junkies alike, these all-terrain vehicles are just like a standard bike except with big, fat tires that are 3.8 inches thick. This extra cushioning means you can take on any trail around Jackson Hole with ease.

fly fishing

5. If the Snake River is more your speed, Fall is the perfect time to get your fishing on. Many of the fish’s natural food sources like flies are hatching throughout the day come Fall, and the fish are indulging in extra eats to prepare for the winter.

6. Fall also brings around hunting season, and the area around Jackson Hole does not disappoint. From deer to the famous Wapiti (elk) you can spend your weekends filling your freezers with the best fresh game in the state.

7. Each fall, Jackson Hole enjoys the sounds of the elk mating season, or “rut,” marked by the otherworldly calls of male elk looking for companionship. Known as “bugling,” the male elk’s cry unlike anything else you’ll hear in nature. Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks are some of the best locales to hear the bugling.

8. If you prefer to stay inside, head to the National Museum of Wildlife Art. The museum houses a robust sculpture trail on the property and a permanent collection throughout its interior exhibits featuring work by prominent artists such as Georgia O’Keeffe, Andy Warhol, Robert Kuhn, John James Audubon, and Carl Rungius chronicling much of the history of wildlife in art, from 2500 B.C. to the present

9. Jackson Hole hosts the Fall Arts Festival each September and an exceptional array of events including gallery tours, a design conference, fashion shows, food events, outdoor art fair, art auctions, and so many more events. The Fall Arts Festival is widely recognized as the premier cultural art even for the Rocky Mountain region.

10. Jackson Hole is a little slower in the Fall. With the bustling lives, people lead nowadays taking a moment to relax and lean into a slower pace of life is something to look forward too. Whether is it sitting outside on your patio reading a book or taking a stroll in one of our many public parks to watch the sunset, Fall can be a great reminder to take a break.

Jackson Hole Fall Arts Festival Celebrates 35 Years as Rocky Mountain West’s Premier Cultural Celebration

An annual Rocky Mountain cultural extravaganza and premier cultural experience, the 35th anniversary Jackson Hole Fall Arts Festival is taking place September 4 – 15, 2019 filling the streets of Jackson and the surrounding area with activities and events devoted to highlighting and honoring the best of all things arts-oriented.

Much has changed in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, since 1984, but one thing has remained constant: The area’s enthusiastic and wholehearted commitment to its support of the arts. The most vibrant and visually stunning example of that dedication, the annual Jackson Hole Fall Arts Festival.

Featuring more than 50 family-friendly events — many of which are free — presented against the colorful backdrop of fall foliage of the the majestic Teton Mountains, and with the summer crowds long gone, this September showcase offers the perfect time to travel to Jackson to experience the mesmerizing magnitude of talented local and national artists, who display artisanship ranging from oil paintings, watercolors and sculptures to fashion, furniture and food.

Named a “Best fall travel destination” by Forbes, Jackson Hole in September is a spectacular time to visit and this annual arts festival is truly a one-of-a-kind event to put on the calendar.

Among the most popular of the Fall Arts Festival favorites, the Western Design Exhibit + Sale returns to the Snow King Center, starting with its action-packed Opening Preview Party on September 5 — a smorgasbord of cocktails, gourmet goodies and hundreds of juried artists’ work to peruse, plus a live runway fashion show and the Winner’s Circle Art Auction, where past award winners receive a 50/50 split with the WDC artist awards fund for newly created works. The exhibit and sale, with its unique meet-the-maker format, continues through September 8, offering guests the opportunity to shop and talk shop directly with the talented artists and designers.

Another cherished event, the Palates & Palettes Gallery Walk, finds galleries staying open late to offer guests time to leisurely look at the collections while sipping wine, snacking on appetizers and, in some cases, taking in the vibrant live music scene. Meanwhile, locals and visitors alike clamor to sample goodies from the Taste of the Tetons event, a feast of the senses that features innovative culinary creations from Jackson Hole’s best chefs.

For architecture and design aficionados, fewer opportunities are more enticing than the dramatic and provocative Showcase of Homes Tour, which allows participants the chance to explore Jackson’s spectacular mountain homes and talk technique and craftsmanship in person with the experts behind every phase of the process, while Western cultural history fans can tour the valley’s historic ranches, where Old West meets New West and the cowboy lifestyle remains very much alive and well.

And finally, the festival finale and fan favorite, the QuickDraw event, will attract dozens of artists to the iconic Jackson Town Square, where each is given 90 minutes to paint, sculpt and sketch their masterpieces before the live auction to sell these one-of-a-kind works.
